Home mold removal and mold prevention with an air filter or purifier

Mold spores are the way the mold reproduces and spreads in your house. Physically, mold spores are just particles floating in the air. You can capture those particles by a household air filter.

There are two main requirements to air filters for house mold spore removal and and fungi growth prevention.

First, is what particle size a particular type of air filter can handle? Most mold spores you may face in yourhouse or appartment have particles size 3 micron or higher. Only some types of house mold produces mold spores as small as 1.5 micron. Basically, a home air filter that captures air borne particles of 1.0 micron size and larger will do. Either an ionic (electronic) air purifier or a a HEPA air filter (or at least a "HEPA" type air filter) will cover this particle removal range.

Second requirement for appartment or house mold spores and mold removal is about air purification speed. In particular, the air filter should remove particles from the whole room air much faster than the mold spores are produced. In more practical terms, this often means that in order to reach over 80 percent efficiency in household mold spores removal, the air purifier should be able to provide at least 6-7 air changes per hour in a given room.

Finally, while an ionic or HEPA air purifier can capture mold spores from the air, and help to limit mold spreading, they won't eliminate the source of the house mold problem, the already existing and growing mold. So, for mold removal, air filters are particularly effective in combination with other mold removal and mold prevention measures (especially moisture control and mold cleaning) to control the household mold growth and mold spore generation.
